In most deployments, water is treated as a simple utility — connect the supply line, verify the pressure, and move on. For operators in hard water regions, there's an additional variable to manage: mineral scale buildup inside the machine's water-heating components.

Scale is the natural result of heating water with high mineral content (primarily calcium and magnesium). Over time, mineral deposits accumulate on heating elements, inside water lines, and on internal surfaces. Left unaddressed, scale reduces heating efficiency, increases energy consumption, degrades water flow, and can eventually cause component failure.

The good news: scale buildup is entirely manageable with a regular descaling cycle.

How to Know If You're in a Hard Water Region

Water hardness varies significantly by geography. In the United States, hard water is particularly prevalent in the Southwest (Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas), the Midwest (Chicago, Indianapolis), and parts of the South (Dallas, Houston).

If you're unsure about your local water hardness, a simple at-home water test strip (available at hardware stores or online for under $15) provides an accurate reading. Water hardness above 120 mg/L (ppm) indicates the potential for meaningful scale accumulation over time.

Visual indicator: White or chalky deposits visible around the water outlet nozzle or inside the drip tray are a practical sign that scaling is underway.

The Descaling Procedure

Descaling should be performed every 30–90 days depending on local water hardness. In very hard water regions (>200 ppm), monthly descaling is advisable. In soft water regions, quarterly is generally sufficient.

What you need: A commercial descaling solution or food-grade citric acid (widely available at restaurant supply stores or online).

Procedure:

  1. Prepare a descaling solution according to product instructions (typically 1 part descaler to 5–10 parts water).
  2. Fill the water tank with the solution.
  3. Run the Water Dispenser mode to cycle the solution through the internal water pathway.
  4. Allow the solution to sit in the system for 15–30 minutes.
  5. Drain the system via the Admin Backend drain function.
  6. Refill the tank with clean fresh water and run 2–3 full dispense cycles to flush residual descaler.
  7. Verify the water outlet runs clear before resuming normal operation.

Inline Water Filters: An Optional Preventive Addition

For operators in very hard water regions or those who want to reduce descaling frequency, an inline water filter installed on the supply line can reduce incoming mineral content. Standard scale-inhibiting filters (using polyphosphate or resin technology) are compatible with the NEO CUCINA's water inlet and are available from most plumbing supply retailers.

A filter reduces scale accumulation rate but does not eliminate it entirely. Periodic descaling remains good practice even with filtration.
